How Long Does It Take to Charge a Tesla? Times by Model & Charger (2026)

Tesla's own metric: in the first 15 minutes a Supercharger adds up to 195 miles to a Model 3 Premium RWD, 182 to a Model Y Premium RWD, 205 to a Model S — and 132-135 to a Cybertruck. A fuller 10-80% session runs about 28-36 minutes on a Model 3/Y, ~31 on a Model S/X and ~35 on a Cybertruck. At home, a Wall Connector does 0-100% overnight in roughly 7-12 hours.

Two things decide your time at the plug: the car's peak DC rate (225-250 kW for most Teslas; the Cybertruck alone pulls 325 kW at V4 posts) and the charging curve — speed falls off steeply above ~80% state of charge, which is why road-trip stops should end at 80%.

"15 min adds" figures are Tesla-published (based on steady 65-mph efficiency). 10-80% times are independent measured/modeled figures — Tesla itself publishes only the 15-minute metric. Wall Connector hours are computed: usable pack ÷ charger power, including ~8% AC overhead. Tesla doesn't publish battery capacities; usable-capacity estimates come from independent pack data.

Why the Standard trims charge slower

Tesla's late-2025 decontenting reached the charging hardware: Model 3/Y Standard trims peak at 225 kW on Superchargers (vs 250 kW) and carry a 32-amp / 7.7 kW onboard AC charger (vs 48-amp / 11.5 kW on Premium and Performance). Net effect: a Standard adds about 30 miles per hour on a home Wall Connector where a Premium adds up to 44, and gives up a few minutes on every fast-charging stop.

V3 vs V4 Superchargers

V3 posts deliver up to 250 kW; the newer V4 posts up to 325 kW — but only the Cybertruck's 800V-class pack can use more than 250 kW. A Model 3/Y/S/X charges at the same peak speed on either post. Even for the Cybertruck, the V4 advantage across a full 10-80% session is only about a minute (measured 35:04 at V4 vs 36:18 at V3) because the peak rate holds only at a low state of charge.

The 80% rule

Charging power tapers hard above ~80% to protect the battery — the last 20% can take as long as the first 70. Road-trip math: two 25-minute stops to 80% beat one 55-minute stop to 100% almost every time. Save 100% charges for home, overnight, before a long departure.

Cold weather

A cold-soaked pack fast-charges dramatically slower until it warms. Navigating to a Supercharger in the Tesla app preconditions the battery en route and largely restores normal times; expect real-world range roughly 20-30% lower in freezing temperatures as well.

On a Wall Connector: roughly 7.4 hours (Model 3 Premium) to 11.6 hours (Cybertruck) for 0-100%, or 9-10 hours for the 32-amp Standard trims. Since you rarely arrive empty, a typical overnight top-up is 2-5 hours. On a 120V outlet you get only ~3 miles of range per hour.

Can a Tesla use the fastest 325 kW V4 Superchargers?
Every Tesla can plug in, but only the Cybertruck draws more than 250 kW. Model 3/Y/S/X are limited by their 400V-class packs (225-250 kW), so V4 posts don't charge them faster than V3.

Should I charge to 80% or 100%?
Daily driving: 80% (or Tesla's recommended limit for your pack chemistry). On road trips, charging past 80% at a Supercharger usually wastes time because of the taper — drive to the next stop instead.
